A 3-year postdoctoral research associate position is available at Newcastle University, UK, in the Centre for Bacterial Cell Biology. The project focuses on bacterial bioenergetics and membrane biology, specifically using Bacillus subtilis as a model organism. The research is part of a BBSRC-funded collaboration between the teams of Henrik Strahl (Newcastle University) and Nadav Amodursky (University of Sheffield), aiming to study the transmission of bacterial proton motive force (PMF) between cellular machineries and its role in energy conversion at the cellular level. The successful candidate will use advanced single-cell techniques, environmentally sensitive fluorescent probes, and fluorescence lifetime spectroscopy to monitor proton transfer, membrane lipid composition, and bioenergetic parameters such as transmembrane electric potential, H+ gradient, and ATP levels. The position offers the opportunity to work in a highly interdisciplinary and international environment, with access to state-of-the-art facilities and collaboration across institutions. Applicants should have a background in bacterial membrane biology, bioenergetics, or molecular bacteriology/cell biology with an interest in expanding into bioenergetics research. Experience with in vivo models and imaging is desirable. The position is fully funded for 3 years, with a starting salary up to £38,784 per year, and includes a competitive relocation package. Visa and Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) fees are covered for international candidates. The application deadline is 9th February 2026, with a planned start date in spring 2026. Interested candidates should apply via the jobs.ac.uk link and may contact Professor Henrik Strahl for informal enquiries.
