The University of Toledo is offering a fully funded PhD research assistantship in Environmental Sciences, focusing on the ecology and behavior of nocturnal migrant songbirds. This opportunity is part of a funded project in the Streby Lab, within the Department of Environmental Sciences, College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. The research centers on movement patterns and habitat selection of songbirds, with a special emphasis on the effects of artificial light on their behavior and broader conservation outcomes. The program provides a collaborative and interdisciplinary environment, supporting research-driven learning and practical scientific contributions in biodiversity conservation, animal behavior, and applied ecological science. The successful candidate will receive a full tuition waiver, a living stipend of approximately $27,000 per year, and comprehensive health insurance. The position is open to both international and domestic students who have a strong academic background in Ecology or a related field. Applicants should demonstrate enthusiasm for fieldwork, data processing, analysis, and science communication. Experience with avian nocturnal migration analysis using NEXRAD weather radar and skills in identifying, capturing, handling, and banding birds of eastern North America are highly desirable. The Streby Lab offers close mentorship, participation in ongoing studies, and opportunities to contribute to publishable scientific work. To apply, candidates should prepare a cover letter, CV, academic transcripts, a statement of research interest, and contact details for academic referees. Applications should be sent directly to Professor Henry Streby. The deadline for submission is 16 January 2026. This PhD position is ideal for highly motivated students interested in animal behavior, field-based research, and conservation science, and offers a pathway to advanced academic and professional success in environmental sciences.
