PhD Assistant in Translational Physiology, Infectiology and Public Health (Porcine Immunology)
Ghent University, a leading institution in Belgium, is offering a PhD assistant position within the Department of Translational Physiology, Infectiology and Public Health, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. The role is centered on academic research into the porcine innate immune response, with a particular focus on gamma delta T cells, in preparation for a doctoral dissertation. The successful candidate will also contribute to teaching activities, including courses such as Immunology, Immunopathology, and Cell Biological and Molecular Techniques for Biomedical Research, and will guide Master theses at the Laboratory of Immunology.
Additional responsibilities include assisting with the diagnosis of immunopathological diseases and providing scientific advice to third parties, supporting both internal and external departmental services. The position is a temporary appointment (AAP) at 100% and offers a two-year contract, which may be renewed twice for two years each, contingent on positive evaluations. The maximum appointment term is six years, in accordance with the Codex of Higher Education. Remuneration is based on salary scale AAP3, and Ghent University provides a comprehensive benefits package, including training opportunities, 36 days of paid leave, bicycle commuting reimbursement, and ecocheques.
Applicants must hold a Master in Veterinary Medicine (preferably), Master in Bio-engineering, or an equivalent degree. The degree requirement must be fulfilled at the start of the appointment. Candidates with diplomas from outside the European Union must submit a certificate of equivalence (NARIC). Excellent teaching and communication skills are essential, and a very good knowledge of Dutch is required to assist Bachelor students during practical courses. Interest in academic and/or project-based research and services is expected.
