PhD Position in Quantum Computing and Quantum Technologies at Aalto University

The Micro and Quantum Systems (MQS) group at Aalto University, located in the Micronova nanofabrication facility, is seeking a new PhD student to join their rapidly growing team. The group conducts cutting-edge research in quantum computing, quantum algorithms, quantum machine learning, and quantum simulations, blending theoretical and experimental approaches. Research topics span from nanoscale transport phenomena to the development of quantum technologies and nanotechnology-based green energy solutions. As a doctoral student, you will work on projects at the forefront of quantum computing, including quantum optimization, quantum simulations, and real-world implementations on advanced quantum computers. The group collaborates with leading research institutions and industry partners, providing an interdisciplinary and impactful research environment. Current projects include applications of quantum computing to optimization problems in communications technology, quantum-safe cryptography, and the development of novel quantum algorithms. The MQS group is part of the Flagship on Photonics and Research Innovation (PREIN) and participates in several national and international research initiatives. The department is well-equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for nanofabrication, microscopy, spectroscopy, and quantum device characterization. Applicants should have a strong background in physics, computer science, mathematics, or related fields, and a passion for quantum technologies. Experience in quantum computing or hands-on experimentation is advantageous. The position is fully funded, with support from research projects and collaborations, though specific stipend details are not provided. The group encourages applications from enthusiastic and curious candidates ready to engage in interdisciplinary research. For more information, visit the Micro and Quantum Systems Group webpage or contact Andrea Marchesin or Professor Ilkka Tittonen directly via email. This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to the advancement of quantum technologies in a dynamic and supportive research environment at Aalto University.

PhD and Postdoctoral Positions in Quantum Computing for Life Science Applications at Aalto University

Aalto University’s Micro and Quantum Systems (MQS) research group is recruiting for the Q-GEN project, a Business Finland-funded initiative that bridges quantum computing and life sciences . The call includes both a PhD/doctoral researcher position and a postdoctoral researcher position, with applications open until 31 August 2026 . The research sits at the intersection of quantum algorithms , quantum information , computational biology , genomics , bioinformatics , materials science , and enzyme design . The project explores hybrid quantum-classical approaches and AI-enabled methods for problems such as genome-assisted breeding, sustainable biomaterials, and cellulose-processing enzyme design. The doctoral researcher role is aimed at candidates with a Master’s degree and strong academic records in theoretical physics, mathematics, computer science, or a related field. The postdoctoral role requires a PhD and a solid background in quantum computing, with demonstrated independent and collaborative research ability. For both roles, English proficiency is required and Finnish is not required. Familiarity with the listed topics is an advantage, and teaching experience is valued. The positions are based at Aalto University in Espoo, Finland, within the Department of Electronics and Nanoengineering. The MQS group is led by Professor Ilkka Tittonen and includes active work on quantum walk algorithms, variational quantum algorithms, adiabatic quantum computation, and quantum machine learning. The project is supported by access to quantum hardware and a multidisciplinary research environment. Funding is provided through Business Finland’s Rise to Challenge programme. The doctoral researcher contract is fixed-term for two years with a starting salary of about 3100€/month , and the postdoctoral researcher contract is fixed-term for two years with a salary of about 4200€/month . To apply, candidates should use Aalto University’s recruitment portal via the relevant “Apply now!” link, submit the required documents in PDF format, and apply before the deadline. Email applications are not accepted.
