PhD Studentships in Sensing, Processing, and AI for Defence and Security (Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics)

The EPSRC/MoD Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Sensing, Processing and AI for Defence and Security (SPADS) is now accepting applications for its prestigious four-year PhD programme, jointly offered by the University of Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt University. This programme is designed for ambitious graduates in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, and related fields who are eager to address real-world research challenges in AI, sensing, and processing to advance ethical defence and national security capabilities.

SPADS CDT provides a vibrant research community, extensive technical training co-designed with industry and government partners, and opportunities for internships. Students will benefit from a supportive cohort environment, professional networking with UK industry and government organisations, and access to world-class academic expertise and facilities at both universities.

The programme offers comprehensive funding, including a competitive tax-free stipend of £31,000 per year for home-fee students (as part of the UK Government’s TechExpert Pilot) and £23,112 per year for international students (2025/26 rates). Tuition fees and a generous research training and support grant (RTSG) are also covered. Students will have the opportunity to undertake internships with industry or government partners and participate in a rich programme of cohort events designed to enhance skills and connections.

Applicants should have a strong undergraduate or master's degree in a relevant field and a passion for research in AI, sensing, processing, and defence/security applications. The CDT encourages applications from women and under-represented groups in STEM, promoting a culture of inclusion and diversity.

Applications are open for a PhD start in September 2026. The deadline for the first round of applications is 31 January 2026. For more information and to apply, visit the SPADS CDT website or contact [email protected].
