PhD Assistant in Industrial Systems Engineering and Product Design (Industry 5.0)
Ghent University invites applications for a PhD Assistant position in the Department of Industrial Systems Engineering and Product Design, focusing on research and teaching in the context of Industry 5.0. The role is based in the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, Department EA18, located in Kortrijk, Belgium. At least 50% of your assignment will be dedicated to academic research in preparation for a doctoral dissertation. The research will center on product-system design for Industry 5.0, with the specific topic to be defined in consultation with your supervisors. You will also assist in departmental teaching activities, particularly in Industrial Design, CAD Modeling, and Engineering. Responsibilities include supervising students during exercises, lab sessions, and project work, as well as co-managing workspaces and labs. Additional duties involve supporting internal and external departmental services, such as participating in Science Day, organizing workshops for programs like “Knappe Koppen,” campus visits, expositions, and SID-ins.
Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in Industrial Design Engineering Technology (preferred) or another relevant field with demonstrable expertise. The degree requirement must be fulfilled at the start of the appointment. For diplomas awarded outside the European Union, a certificate of equivalence (NARIC) is required. Candidates should possess scientific skills, knowledge of CAD modeling and engineering (preferably Siemens NX), and proficiency in design engineering, rapid prototyping, CAD drafting, and various manufacturing methods. Teaching experience, participation in training or conferences, and didactic skills acquired through extracurricular activities are considered assets. Strong teaching and communication skills, professionalism, independence, meticulousness, vision on research and education, teamwork, and creativity are expected.
The position offers a two-year appointment, renewable twice for two years (maximum six years), subject to positive evaluation. The appointment will start on 1 November 2026 at the earliest.
