Jane Parker
University of Reading
The University of Reading, in partnership with Nestlé and a consortium of leading food industry partners, is launching the Food Consortium Industrial Doctoral Landscape Award (IDLA) to address critical skills shortages and scientific challenges in the UK food and drink sector. This prestigious PhD program, led by Professor Jane Parker (Flavour Chemistry, Food Research Group Lead, Flavour Centre manager), will focus on research areas such as healthier food formulations, sustainable ingredients, and consumer acceptance. The initiative is part of a major UKRI and BBSRC investment, supporting over 320 new PhD studentships across the UK, with the Food Consortium IDLA specifically targeting food innovation and sustainability. Successful applicants will join a collaborative research environment, working closely with industry leaders including Nestlé, Mondelēz International, Samworth Brothers, PepsiCo, Diageo, Yeo Valley Organic, Nomad Foods, Pladis, and others. The program is designed to embed doctoral researchers within industrial settings, providing hands-on experience and the opportunity to co-design and co-deliver research projects with both academic and industry mentors. Co-leads include Rebecca Ford (Clark) from the University of Nottingham and Laura Wilkinson from Swansea University, ensuring a broad and interdisciplinary supervisory team. Research topics will span food science, flavour chemistry, bioscience, biotechnology, and sustainable food systems. The program aims to develop world-class research talent capable of driving innovation and supporting the UK’s largest manufacturing sector. Funding is provided by the BBSRC and industry partners, with studentships expected to cover tuition fees and provide a stipend. Detailed funding and eligibility criteria will be available in the official studentship adverts, which are anticipated to be released early next year. Applicants should have a strong academic background in food science, chemistry, biology, or a related discipline, and demonstrate an interest in food research, sustainability, or industrial collaboration. The program offers a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research with real-world impact, supported by a network of academic and industry experts. For more information and to stay updated on application deadlines, prospective candidates should monitor the University of Reading and Food Consortium IDLA websites. This is an exceptional opportunity for aspiring researchers to advance their careers in food science and innovation within a dynamic, industry-engaged doctoral training environment.
