Critical role of ditches and smaller water bodies in global C-cycles

A fully funded PhD position is available at the University of Glasgow to investigate the critical and underexplored role of ditches and small water bodies in the global carbon cycle. The project is part of the Iapetus Doctoral Training Partnership and will be supervised by Dr Adrian M Bass (University of Glasgow), Dr Amy Pickard (UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology), Prof Jens-Arne Subke (University of Stirling), and Dr Mike Peacock (University of Liverpool). The research will focus on quantifying biogeochemical pathways, greenhouse gas fluxes, and the environmental, hydrological, and management drivers influencing ditch ecosystems. The successful candidate will use state-of-the-art field and laboratory techniques, including water monitoring, sediment sampling, and greenhouse gas measurements, and will have access to advanced analytical facilities across the partner institutions. The project offers comprehensive training in environmental science and biogeochemistry, with opportunities for fieldwork, data analysis, and scientific writing. Applicants should have a strong background in environmental or earth sciences and an interest in aquatic biogeochemistry.
