Substitute Senior Lecturer in Computational Linguistics at Uppsala University
Uppsala University is seeking a half-time Substitute Senior Lecturer in Computational Linguistics for a one-year appointment starting January 2026. The position is based at the Department of Linguistics and Philology, which conducts research and education in language science and text studies, with a focus on Asian languages and cultures, classical European languages, linguistics, and computational linguistics. The department offers education at undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels, fostering an international and intellectually vibrant environment.
The main responsibilities include supervising master's theses, teaching in the international master's program in Language Technology, and conducting research in computational linguistics. The teaching duties primarily involve thesis supervision and courses such as Information Retrieval and Language Technology: Research and Development, all delivered in English. The research group focuses on digital philology and multilingual language technology, with increasing emphasis on large language models and generative AI.
Applicants must hold a doctoral degree or equivalent scientific competence in computational linguistics or a closely related field, or possess other relevant professional expertise. Demonstrated pedagogical proficiency is required, including higher education pedagogical training (minimum ten weeks) or equivalent experience. The ability to teach in English is mandatory. Candidates should have scientific, pedagogical, and professional skills relevant to the position's subject and duties. Personal qualities such as flexibility, collaboration skills, and responsibility are essential.
Assessment criteria include pedagogical and scientific proficiency, with particular emphasis on teaching and research experience in computational linguistics, especially in machine learning, large language models, and language technology applications in information retrieval. Administrative, leadership, and collaboration skills are also valued. All merits must be documented for assessment.
The position is a 12-month, 50% part-time, temporary employment with individual salary negotiation. The application deadline is December 23, 2025.
