Innovative PhD Research on Memory NK Cells in HIV
The Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) invites applications for a fully funded PhD position focused on the study of memory natural killer (NK) cells in HIV, within the Neuro-Aging & Viro-Immunotherapy (NAVI) research group. This innovative project is part of an FWO Fundamental Research initiative and aims to investigate the phenotype, function, and mechanisms by which memory NK cells interact with HIV-infected cells, with the goal of developing novel immunological strategies to target the HIV reservoir.
Despite the success of antiretroviral therapy (ART), HIV persists in long-lived cellular reservoirs, posing a significant barrier to a cure. Recent discoveries have shown that NK cells, traditionally considered part of the innate immune system, can acquire memory-like properties, enhancing their response to viral infections. This project will dissect how these memory NK cells can be harnessed in curative strategies against HIV.
The PhD candidate will join a highly interdisciplinary and collaborative environment, working at the interface of basic immunology, virology, and clinical research. The project benefits from access to well-characterized HIV cohorts, state-of-the-art immunological technologies, and a strong international network, including collaborations with clinicians at UZ Brussel and researchers at the Leibniz Institute for Immunotherapy (LIT). The home base for this research will be the Brussels Health Campus (Jette).
Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in Biomedical Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Molecular Biology, or a related field, and demonstrate a strong interest in immunology, NK cell biology, and HIV research. Practical experience with cell culture, microscopy, flow cytometry, and immunological assays is required, while experience with bioinformatics or omics approaches is considered an asset. Candidates must possess strong analytical skills, a critical scientific mindset, and excellent English communication abilities. The ability to work both independently and collaboratively in an international research environment is essential. Additional eligibility criteria apply regarding previous assistant mandates and, for non-EEA nationals, permit and residence requirements.
The position offers a full-time PhD scholarship for 12 months, extendable up to a maximum of 48 months upon positive evaluation. The grant is linked to government pay scales, and the start date is planned for 01/04/2026. VUB provides a supportive and diverse workplace, with benefits including training in advanced immunological and virological techniques, opportunities for international collaboration and conference attendance, access to unique patient-derived samples, telework allowances, hospitalisation insurance, public transport reimbursement, affordable campus meals, sports facilities, and more.
To apply, submit your CV, motivation letter (max 2 pages), academic transcripts, diploma, and contact details for two references via the VUB job portal by 15 February 2026.
