University of Exeter’s Living Systems Institute is advertising fully funded PhD studentships for autumn 2026 entry in an interdisciplinary project area spanning pancreatic beta-cell regeneration , protein design , AI tools , zebrafish , and the control of neural signals . The post is linked to Jonathan Phillips (UKRI Future Leaders Fellow in Protein Choreography) and Yu Hsuan Carol Yang, with supervision drawn from the Living Systems Institute and related departments. The broader programme at Exeter’s Living Systems Institute brings together biologists, physicists, mathematicians, computational scientists, and engineers, and the advertised project encourages students from biological, medical, physical sciences, engineering, and computation backgrounds. Funding: for eligible home students, the studentship covers home tuition fees, a tax-free stipend equivalent to the UKRI minimum (£21,805 per year), and a training budget for 3.5 years full-time. International applicants may apply, but the award only covers part of the international tuition fee and does not include a living stipend; applicants with external partial or full funding are also welcome. Eligibility: applicants should hold a BSc, MSc, or equivalent with first or upper second-class honours. English language proficiency is required (e.g., IELTS) for non-majority-English-speaking-country nationals. The project specifically notes that students do not need prior experience in all techniques, but should have an interdisciplinary and problem-solving mindset. Application: the closing date is 8 June 2026 . Applicants should apply via the studentship application link, state the project they are applying for, and upload a CV, personal statement, transcript(s), and English evidence if needed. Two references must be submitted by the deadline. This is a strong opportunity for students interested in biology , biomedical engineering , neuroscience , and computer science at the University of Exeter.
