The PhD project is based at the Erlangen Center for Interface Research and Catalysis (ECRC) at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) and is hosted in the group of Prof. Jörg Libuda. The research explores catalytic processes on real and model catalyst systems with a strong focus on understanding how modifiers, additives, and activation procedures influence highly selective (de)functionalization reactions. The core of the work is an experimental investigation of catalytic function under realistic working conditions using in situ and operando methods. A major emphasis is placed on infrared spectroscopy, especially DRIFTS and PM-IRAS, to follow surface species and reaction intermediates. Depending on the project needs, complementary microscopy techniques such as scanning tunneling microscopy and atomic force microscopy may also be used to deepen the mechanistic picture. The project aims to establish structure-property relationships in catalysis by combining careful experimental design with advanced measurement and analysis. The selected PhD researcher will design and carry out experiments on real and model systems, process and interpret the data, and develop reliable analysis workflows. The role also includes collaboration within an interdisciplinary team, presentation of results at conferences, manuscript preparation, and some student mentoring. The wider research environment at ECRC and FAU provides access to modern laboratories, advanced instrumentation, and strong links to leading synchrotron facilities. The Libuda Group works across surface science, electrocatalysis, photochemistry, and in situ/operando methodologies, with applications relevant to energy conversion and storage, sustainable chemical production, and advanced materials. The position is therefore well suited to a student interested in catalysis at the interface of experimental surface science, spectroscopy, and materials-focused reaction studies.
