This 3.5-year EPSRC-funded PhD project at Cardiff University focuses on developing efficient and low-cost offshore wind integration solutions using a novel hybrid Diode Rectifier–Modular Multilevel Converter (DR–MMC) HVDC topology and advanced control design. Offshore wind is a key resource for the UK’s 2050 net-zero target, but current HVDC transmission technologies face challenges in cost efficiency and grid stability. The project addresses two major issues: high electricity prices driven by gas dependency and reduced grid stability due to the rapid growth of HVDC-interfaced renewables. The widely used MMC topology, while offering excellent control, is expensive and bulky, whereas the DR topology is more cost-effective but lacks necessary control capabilities. The proposed hybrid DR–MMC approach aims to combine the strengths of both: the DR unit will handle most wind power, reducing platform size and investment, while a smaller MMC in series will provide dynamic grid support and enhance system stability. Research tasks include coordinated DR–MMC topology and control for stable power delivery, optimization of the DR/MMC capacity ratio for economic and secure operation, dual-port grid-forming onshore MMC control for grid stability, start-up and black-start sequence design, and advanced grid-support strategies for rapid inertia, frequency, and voltage support. The project promises to deliver efficient, affordable offshore transmission solutions, accelerating the UK’s renewable transition and ensuring grid stability and affordable electricity. The successful candidate will join the Cardiff School of Engineering and work under the supervision of Professor Jun Liang, a leading expert in HVDC and power electronics. Applicants should have or expect a first-class or good 2.1 degree in Engineering or a related field, and non-native English speakers must meet language requirements (IELTS 6.5 or equivalent). Full funding is available for both Home and International students, covering tuition fees and a competitive stipend. The application deadline is January 9, 2026, with interviews for shortlisted candidates to follow. For informal inquiries, contact Prof. Jun Liang at [email protected]. Applications should be submitted via the Cardiff University postgraduate portal, specifying the project title, supervisor, and funding reference DLA JUNL 2026.
