Postdoctoral Researcher or Senior Research Fellow in Human Physiology

The University of Oulu, a leading multidisciplinary and international research university in Finland, is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher or Senior Research Fellow in human physiology. This opportunity is based within the Research Unit of Biomedicine and Internal Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, which comprises 18 research groups dedicated to advancing knowledge in metabolic, cardiovascular, immune, and environmental disease mechanisms. The unit’s research leverages human cohorts, clinical trials, exercise testing, biobank samples, genomics, animal models, and advanced cell and 3D tissue models to identify preventive measures and novel therapeutic approaches for common diseases, while ensuring safe pharmacotherapy and addressing environmental exposures and chemical risks. The successful candidate will contribute to strengthening the research focus in human physiology, particularly whole-body metabolic regulation and environmental physiology. The role involves both research and teaching responsibilities, including undergraduate and postgraduate instruction in the medical school. Applicants should demonstrate vision, leadership, and guidance in the field, with a strong background in research and teaching of metabolic physiology and environmental physiology. Qualifications for the postdoctoral researcher position include a doctoral degree in human physiology, environmental physiology, or a closely related field, completed within the last 10 years. Candidates must show independent scientific work, teaching experience with medical students, and fluency in Finnish or English. Senior Research Fellow applicants require a suitable doctoral degree, evidence of scientific research, teaching skills, ability to lead a research team, and success in acquiring research funding. International experience and work in multiple research institutes are highly valued. The selection process considers scientific publications, postgraduate training, teaching merits, international scientific activities, and administrative experience. The position is fixed-term from 1 June 2026 to 31 December 2029. The starting gross salary ranges from approximately 3700-4300 € per month for postdoctoral researchers and 4200-5700 € per month for senior research fellows, based on Finnish university salary levels and personal performance (up to 50% extra). Additional benefits include the wellness benefit ePassi, Buddy Programme, Spouse Network, HR Excellence in Research label, and other staff benefits. The University of Oulu offers a supportive and enthusiastic research environment, development and career options, and promotes flexibility and work-life balance. Finland is renowned for its high quality of life, safety, excellent education system, and competitive economy. To apply, candidates must submit their application online by 17 April 2026, including a CV, cover letter, publication list, certificates/diplomas, and contact information for two referees. Senior Research Fellow applicants should also provide a teaching portfolio, research merits, and action plan. The application should outline how planned activities will align with the physiology groups and include future directions for teaching human physiology. Eligible applicants will be invited to an interview, and all will be notified during the selection process. The University of Oulu welcomes applicants from diverse backgrounds and encourages inclusivity. For further information, contact Professor Karl-Heinz Herzig at [email protected]. Apply directly via the University of Oulu recruitment system.
