PhD Position in Thermodynamics – Measurement and Modeling of Thermophysical Properties of Fluids
This PhD position at Helmut Schmidt University, Hamburg, is offered within the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Civil Engineering, specifically in the Chair of Thermodynamics led by Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. Karsten Meier. The research focuses on the experimental determination, computational calculation, and modeling of thermophysical properties of fluids, with applications in energy and environmental technology. The group operates and develops unique apparatuses for measuring sound velocity, density, and viscosity under high pressures (up to 5000 bar). The successful candidate will further develop an apparatus for measuring sound velocity in liquids and compressed gases, conduct measurements on pure fluids and mixtures across wide temperature ranges, and create new equations of state based on experimental data or perform Monte Carlo simulations using ab initio potentials. The position also involves presenting research at national and international conferences and contributing to teaching (3 trimester hours per week). Administrative and academic self-governance tasks are part of the role. The position is a fixed-term, full-time contract for 3 years, paid according to Entgeltgruppe 13 TVöD, with full employee benefits including annual bonus, pension scheme, flexible working hours, subsidized public transport, campus childcare, and access to campus facilities.
