PhD Candidate in Multi-Agent Communication to Enhance Human Learning

The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) is seeking a PhD Candidate for a project focused on Multi-Agent Communication to Enhance Human Learning, based in the Department of Computer Science. This position is part of the newly established AI Centre for the Empowerment of Human Learning (AI LEARN), a national initiative dedicated to advancing responsible, human-centered artificial intelligence to empower learning. AI LEARN aims to become an internationally leading interdisciplinary hub, fostering foundational research, responsible innovation, robust governance, and broad capacity building. The PhD fellowship is associated with the Technological Advancement cluster, with the goal of evolving advanced, human-centered AI technology to empower human learning. The candidate will design, develop, and evaluate systems and models that enhance learning through AI, focusing on multi-agent networks and communication protocols. Research activities include developing and evaluating models and agents, training models using supervised and unsupervised fine-tuning (such as Retrieval-Augmented Generation, Low-Rank Adaptation, Direct Preference Optimization, and Reinforcement Learning from Human/AI Feedback), and conducting experiments with partners in schools and public/private sectors. The project aims to create innovative educational technologies and interactive, adaptive learning experiences, in collaboration with a postdoc. Duties include literature review, participatory design workshops, service and interface implementation, case studies, empirical data collection and analysis, report and article writing, conference attendance, and dissemination activities within the AI LEARN centre. Applicants must have a relevant Master's degree (Computer Science, Machine Learning, AI, Learning Technology), strong academic background (B or better), and solid knowledge of research methods. English proficiency is required, with specific test scores accepted. Norwegian language skills are not mandatory at entry but must be developed during employment. Preferred qualifications include research assistant experience, relevant publications, and presentation skills in Norwegian/Scandinavian. The position offers a gross annual salary of NOK 550,800, favorable pension terms, working capital, and access to employee benefits. The employment period is three years, with a possible extension to four years. NTNU values diversity and encourages applications from all backgrounds. Applications must be submitted electronically via Jobbnorge.no, including all required documentation. The city of Trondheim offers a vibrant cultural scene, excellent welfare services, and a high quality of life. NTNU is Norway's leading academic IT environment, with a broad range of research and study programs in computer science and related fields.
