KTH Royal Institute of Technology

KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm is seeking a new PhD student in Visual Optics, focusing on the project “Improved myopia control via peripheral image quality assessment.” This interdisciplinary research, funded by the Swedish Research Council, is part of the ongoing Stockholm Myopia Study and aims to advance understanding of myopia development and control. The project investigates how both central and peripheral retinal image quality influence myopia progression, with the goal of developing effective optical treatments. The PhD student will join the Visual Optics group at the Department of Applied Physics, School of Engineering Sciences. Research activities include developing instrumentation and procedures for measuring retinal image quality, conducting measurements in children in collaboration with Karolinska Institutet, and analyzing data to identify biomarkers and protective mechanisms for myopia. The work provides a unique interface between optical engineering, vision science, and clinical practice, and offers opportunities for research exchange with visual optics laboratories across Europe. Applicants should have a strong background in optics, experience with experimental work and programming (preferably MATLAB), and a keen interest in doctoral studies. Eligibility requires a second cycle degree (such as a master's) or equivalent, with at least 240 higher education credits, including 60 at the second-cycle level. Proficiency in English (equivalent to English B/6) is mandatory. The selection process values goal orientation, independence, collaboration skills, and strong communication abilities in English. Personal skills are highly emphasized. The position is fully funded, offering a monthly salary according to KTH’s doctoral student salary agreement, and includes employee benefits and opportunities for professional development. The employment is full-time and temporary, with a maximum duration of four years. The application deadline is February 11, 2026. To apply, candidates must submit a complete application through KTH’s recruitment system, including a CV, cover letter, diplomas, certificates of language proficiency, and relevant publications. All documents must be certified and translated if not in English or Swedish. For more information, visit the official job posting or contact Professor Linda Lundström at [email protected] . This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in visual optics and applied physics at one of Europe’s leading technical universities.
