The University of York is seeking a Research Technician in Biology to join a leading team focused on insect synthetic biology. The position is based on the University of York campus in the United Kingdom and is ideal for early career professionals in biology. The successful candidate will support cutting-edge research projects aimed at developing new, safe, and sustainable methods for reducing the harm caused by pest insects, with a particular focus on piRNA-based antiviral effects in the mosquito Aedes aegypti. The role involves hands-on laboratory work, data collection, assisting with experiments, sample processing, and analysis, as well as working closely with experienced researchers and academic teams. The project is funded by the BBSRC and aims to develop transgenic mosquitoes unable to transmit a range of severe human pathogens, while also exploring the fundamental mechanisms of piRNA antiviral activity. The post-holder will join a larger team working on virus-refractory Aedes aegypti through various molecular mechanisms. Training in insect transgenesis and analysis of transgenic strains will be provided. The position is full-time (37 hours per week), fixed-term, and offers a salary of £28,778 - £36,636 per year (Grade 4/5), depending on skills and experience. Applicants should have an undergraduate degree, HND, HNC, A levels, or equivalent experience in a relevant field, with enthusiasm and experience in working with insects. Knowledge of relevant research techniques and methodologies, evidence of careful and reliable working, and the ability to work effectively in a team are required. The University of York is committed to diversity and inclusion and encourages applications from underrepresented groups. The application deadline is 16 February 2026, with a nominal start date on or before 19 March 2026. For informal enquiries, contact Prof Luke Alphey at [email protected]. Apply online via the University of York jobs portal. For more information, visit the official job posting.
