Södertörn University in Stockholm, Sweden, invites applications for a doctoral studentship in Sociology, focusing on the research area of Politics, Economy and the Organisation of Society. This position is affiliated with the Baltic and East European Graduate School (BEEGS), offering a unique opportunity to engage in multidisciplinary research with a regional emphasis on the Baltic Sea, Eastern Europe, the Nordic countries, and the European Union. The Sociology Department at the School of Social Sciences provides a vibrant research environment, with expertise spanning political sociology (including social movements, protests, organisations, and civil society), social stratification (ethnicity, class, gender), sociological criminology (surveillance, violence), social welfare and policy, organisation studies, urban sociology, education, and migration. Doctoral students are encouraged to pursue independent scholarly research within these subfields, supported by active participation in national and international sociology networks and multidisciplinary platforms such as Contested Democracy and research centres like the Centre for the Study of Political Organisation and Reinvent – the Centre for City Dynamics. The doctoral programme comprises 240 credits, equivalent to four years of full-time study, with the possibility of extension for departmental duties or approved leave. The position includes employment as a doctoral student, with salary and benefits in accordance with the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance. The research environment is highly collaborative, fostering innovative syntheses across disciplines and perspectives, and is particularly suited for candidates interested in the intersection of politics, economy, and societal organisation in the Baltic and East European context. Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in Sociology or a closely related field, demonstrate a strong academic record, and possess a clear research interest in the designated area. Proficiency in English is required, and candidates may need to submit a research proposal and supporting documents as specified by the university. The application deadline is 11 February 2026, with employment commencing on 1 September 2026. For further information, prospective applicants may contact Professor Magnus Wennerhag ([email protected]), Director of Studies Liudmila Voronova ([email protected]), or Director of Studies Florence Fröhlig ([email protected]). Applications should be submitted online via the Södertörn University portal, and detailed instructions are available at the provided vacancy link. This studentship offers a funded opportunity to join a dynamic academic community and contribute to cutting-edge research in sociology, with a particular focus on the politics, economy, and organisation of society in the Baltic and East European regions.
