The Institute of Business Informatics – Software Engineering at Johannes Kepler Universität Linz (JKU) is recruiting a PhD student/project researcher in Quantum Software Engineering, with a focus on hybrid quantum/classical program specification, synthesis, and AI-supported deployment pipelines. The position is part of the FFG Austria-funded project “Quantum Algorithm Engineering: Bridging the Gap to Industrial Applications.” The research aims to develop novel software engineering concepts, methods, and techniques for quantum algorithms and hybrid quantum/classical software systems, with opportunities for collaboration with partner institutions. Research topics include the specification and synthesis of hybrid quantum/classical programs, AI-driven and model-based software engineering methodologies, and the development of deployment pipelines for quantum software. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to perform a PhD thesis within the scope of the project and contribute to advancing the state of the art in quantum software engineering. Applicants should hold a master’s degree in Computer Science, Business Informatics, AI, Mathematics, Physics, or a related field. Experience in software engineering is required, while experience with quantum computing platforms, programming languages, and algorithms is desirable. The position is funded for four years, with an initial one-year contract and expected renewal. The salary is approximately EUR 2,785.00 per month gross, paid 14 times per year for a 30-hour work week. To apply, interested candidates should contact Prof. Dr. Manuel Wimmer by email, including a CV, list of publications, and a motivation letter. Applications are reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information, visit the project and supervisor pages linked above.

The application of quantum computing to combinatorial optimization problems is attracting increasing research interest, resulting in diverse approaches and research streams. This study aims at identifying, classifying, and understanding existing solution approaches as well as typical use cases in the field. The obtained classification schemes are based on a full-text analysis of 156 included papers. Our results can be used by researchers and practitioners to (i) better understand adaptations to and utilizations of existing gate-based and quantum annealing approaches and (ii) identify typical use cases for quantum computing in areas such as graph optimization, routing, and scheduling.
