The project is embedded in the interdisciplinary NCCR Genesis network, which connects microbiology with geochemistry, planetary science, physics, chemistry, and origin-of-life research. This doctoral project focuses on the physiology and bioenergetics of alkaliphilic methanogenic archaea . You will investigate how methanogens grow under high-pH conditions, how they conserve energy and acquire carbon, and which signatures distinguish biologically produced methane from abiotic methane. The research combines anaerobic cultivation , physiology , and biochemistry , with relevance to the methane cycle, extreme environments, and astrobiology. Academic fields and keywords: environmental microbiology, microbiology, biology, biochemistry, environmental science, earth science, geochemistry, astrobiology, planetary science. Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold an MSc or equivalent in microbiology, environmental sciences, or a related field. Experience in anaerobic cultivation and/or protein biochemistry is an advantage. Strong curiosity, enthusiasm for experimental work, and excellent English communication skills are expected. Funding: the position is fully funded for 4 years. Application materials: cover letter, CV with publication list, diploma, transcript of records, and contact details of two references.
