The University of Oulu, a leading multidisciplinary research university in Finland, invites applications for a Doctoral Researcher position in Integrated Sensing and Communication for Biomedical Imaging. This opportunity is based at the Centre for Wireless Communications (CWC) within the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (ITEE), and is part of the Infotech strategic spearhead projects for 2026–2028. The project, titled "Enabling Synthetic Aperture Based Health Monitoring with NextG Cell Phones," aims to develop synthetic aperture radar-based sensing methods, models, and experiments for human health monitoring in specific biomedical applications. As a doctoral researcher, you will engage in interdisciplinary research at the intersection of wireless communications, radio engineering, and signal processing. The work involves both theoretical algorithm development and hands-on radio channel measurements using advanced RF laboratory equipment and realistic human phantom models. You will contribute to the development of AI-enabled synthetic aperture-based methods and algorithms, analyze measurement data to detect abnormalities, and collaborate with a diverse team spanning multiple research units, including the Centre for Wireless Communications, the Research Unit of Health Sciences and Technology, the Microelectronics research unit, and the Biomimetics and Intelligent Systems Group. The position offers a supportive and active research community, career development opportunities, and wellness benefits such as ePassi for sports, culture, and well-being. The University of Oulu holds the HR Excellence in Research quality label, ensuring a high standard of working conditions and career support. The Buddy Programme and Spouse Network further assist international researchers and their families in settling into Oulu. Eligibility requires a completed Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Communications Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related discipline before the start date. Candidates should demonstrate experience or strong interest in combining theoretical concepts with practical measurements, and familiarity with topics such as radio channel measurements, radio wave propagation, integrated communications and sensing, near-field focusing/beamforming, radar algorithms, or RF waveforms. Fluency in written and spoken English is essential, along with the ability to work independently and collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams. Additional skills in RF measurement equipment, AI/ML tools, computer vision, sensor fusion, and understanding of radio wave interaction with human tissue or dielectric materials are considered advantageous. The position is full-time and fixed-term for three years, starting on 01.02.2026 or as soon as possible thereafter. The starting gross salary is approximately €2600–2800 per month, depending on qualifications and performance, with a six-month trial period. The application deadline is 16 January 2026 (23:59 Finnish local time). Applications must be submitted in English via the University’s Varbi recruitment system and include a cover letter, CV, certificates and transcripts, and a research plan. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview, and all applicants will be notified of the outcome. For further information, contact Assistant Professor Nuutti Tervo ([email protected]) or Adjunct Professor Mariella Särestöniemi ([email protected]). The University of Oulu welcomes applicants from all backgrounds and promotes diversity and inclusion in its research community. Application link: Apply here
