The BBSRC Yorkshire Bioscience Doctoral Training Partnership (YBDTP) offers a fully funded PhD opportunity at the University of Sheffield, focusing on the integrated purification, formulation, and delivery of next-generation RNA medicines, including mRNA, circRNA, and saRNA. The YBDTP is a collaborative initiative across leading universities in Yorkshire and Teesside, providing interdisciplinary training in biosciences, biotechnology, and data analysis. This project addresses critical bottlenecks in the production and delivery of RNA-based therapeutics and vaccines, aiming to streamline manufacturing processes, develop advanced purification methods, and design innovative delivery systems. Key research activities include developing integrated workflows for RNA production, creating new chromatography techniques for advanced RNA formats, exploring hybrid delivery systems (such as lipid-polymer-peptide combinations), and applying computational modelling and AI-driven self-optimising flow processes for formulation screening. The project also involves evaluating formulations in cell culture to assess protein expression, cell viability, and immune responses, with the goal of uncovering new mechanistic insights. Supervision is provided by a distinguished team: Dr Zoltán Kis (RNA biomanufacturing and modelling), Prof Mark Dickman (RNA analytics), Prof Nick Warren (biomaterials and polymers for drug delivery), and Prof Richard Bourne (automated nanoparticle formulation and digital manufacturing). Students will receive hands-on training in molecular biology, bioprocessing, materials chemistry, computational modelling, and cell biology, preparing them for careers in academia, biotech, or pharma, and offering exposure to industry collaborations. The studentship is open to UK, EU, and international students with at least an upper second-class honours degree in a relevant science or mathematics discipline. The programme values diversity and encourages applications from underrepresented groups. Funding covers a tax-free stipend at the UKRI rate (£20,780 for 2025/26), tuition fees at the UK rate, and research costs for four years. International students must cover their own visa, NHS surcharge, and travel costs. The application deadline is 7 January 2026, and candidates should submit an expression of interest form. Shortlisted applicants will be invited for interview, and successful candidates must confirm acceptance within 10 days. For more information, visit the YBDTP website or contact the supervisors directly.
