The Atmospheric Science Group at the Department of Environmental Sciences, University of Basel, led by Prof. Dr. Markus Kalberer, is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to develop a novel instrument for near real-time detection of airborne pathogens. This interdisciplinary project, in collaboration with the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH) and the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW), addresses the urgent need for rapid and reliable airborne pathogen detection, highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The project aims to design, build, and validate a compact, automated instrument capable of quantifying specific pathogens in air in near real-time. The approach involves collecting biological particles from a continuous air flow, selectively capturing them using antigen-specific monoclonal antibodies, and detecting and quantifying them via flow cytometry. The postdoctoral researcher will lead the optimization and testing of the bioaerosol detection instrument, focusing initially on influenza viruses, and will integrate modules for bioaerosol collection, biological detection, and flow cytometry measurement. Laboratory and field experiments, data analysis, and performance evaluation are key components of the role. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with an ongoing PhD project at the University of Basel and with partners at Swiss TPH and FHNW, combining expertise in aerosol collection, immunological detection, and engineering. The position offers access to state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and a dynamic, international research environment. The University of Basel provides an inclusive and supportive workplace, internationally competitive employment conditions, and attractive benefits. Basel is a vibrant, international city at the intersection of Switzerland, France, and Germany, known for its high quality of life. Applicants should hold a PhD in biology, atmospheric science, engineering, physics, analytical chemistry, or a related discipline. Experience in experimental research and instrument design or prototyping is essential. Knowledge of microfluidic device design is highly desirable, and experience with aerosol sampling, particle characterization, or biosensing methods is advantageous. Candidates should demonstrate excellent organizational, teamwork, and communication skills, and be open to interdisciplinary collaboration. Fluency in English is required; German language skills are an advantage. This is a 1.5-year fully funded postdoctoral position. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled, with a final deadline of 30 November 2025. To apply, submit your application via the University of Basel's online recruiting platform, including a motivation letter, detailed CV with publications, a copy of your PhD diploma, and contact details of two academic references. For further information, contact Prof. Dr. Markus Kalberer at [email protected].
