PhD Scholarships in Engineering of Quantum Light Sources and System Architecture for Photonic Quantum Computing

DTU Electro at the Technical University of Denmark is recruiting up to three PhD scholarship holders for the EU Horizon Europe MSCA Doctoral Network PHOTONIQC (A Photonic Quantum Computer). The projects sit in the Quantum Light Sources Group and focus on engineering highly efficient solid-state single-photon sources and on system architecture for photonic quantum computing. The research spans three closely related PhD directions: (1) design and numerical simulation of quantum-dot-based single-photon sources; (2) nanofabrication and optical characterization of devices using DTU Nanolab cleanroom facilities; and (3) system architecture for cluster-state / graph-state photonic quantum computing. Across the projects, the aim is to push source efficiency and photon indistinguishability towards unity while supporting distributed photonic quantum information processing. You will work in an international consortium of 15 PhD students across seven countries, contributing to new components, protocols, and experimental implementations of multi-node distributed quantum computing. Locally, you will join a team with senior researchers and PhD students at DTU Electro, and will be involved in design, fabrication, characterization, scientific writing, conference contributions, and supervision of MSc/BSc/Fagprojekt students. The position includes secondments at partner institutions such as Ruhr University, CNRS, CEA, Quandela, and the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory, along with doctoral-network training schools, workshops, and a final conference. The appointment is a full-time 3-year PhD scholarship starting 1 March 2027 (or by mutual agreement). Eligibility requires a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS) or equivalent. MSCA mobility rules apply: candidates must not have lived or carried out their main activity in Denmark for more than 12 months in the 3 years before recruitment. Applications must be submitted online by 15 November 2026 and uploaded as a single PDF in English including a cover letter, CV, transcripts, and BSc/MSc diploma with grading scale description. Funding is provided through the EU Horizon Europe MSCA Doctoral Network, with salary according to the Danish collective agreement, including a base salary, PhD supplement, and pension. The position is based at DTU Electro in Copenhagen, Denmark.
