Fully funded PhD opportunity at the University of Canterbury in natural hazard resilience , Indigenous landscapes , Māori-led community resilience , climate adaptation , policy and planning , and law . The project is hosted at UC Civil and Environmental Engineering and is funded by the Natural Hazards and Resilience Platform Te Pae Tūroa. The PhD topic is Holistic community-led natural hazard resilience in Indigenous landscapes . It focuses on Māori communities whose ancestral territories are adjacent to estuarine and coastal lacustrine ecosystems, and examines how future climate change, sea-level rise, hydrogeological change, and geophysical hazards affect these places. The project also addresses how planning, legislative, and land tenure systems shape what Māori communities can implement on their own lands. Research components include an international review of planning, policy, and legislative frameworks; a longue durée analysis of Indigenous landscapes and infrastructure development from pre-contact to the present; analysis of climate adaptation and disaster risk/resilience frameworks; and identification of Indigenous-led infrastructure pathways that support ecosystem health and mahinga kai. Applicants should have training or experience in law , policy and planning , disaster resilience , climate adaptation , community engagement , or related areas. Geospatial analysis experience would be beneficial. The award provides a NZ$35,000 per year tax-free stipend for 3.5 years , with university fees covered .
