Doctoral student in Regenerative and Circular Manufacturing at Chalmers University of Technology , Gothenburg, Sweden. This PhD project is based in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, within the division Design & Human Factors, and focuses on a forward-looking research agenda for regenerative manufacturing . The central question is how manufacturing systems can move beyond simply reducing harm and instead generate a net-positive contribution to the planet. The research explores how industrial systems can be designed as part of ecological systems, with attention to eco-efficiency, circularity, ecosystem services, trade-offs, and rebound effects. The position is aimed at students with a strong interest in environmental sustainability, scientific rigor, and critical thinking. The successful candidate will work on theoretical foundations, methods, models, and tools for regenerative and circular industrial systems, and will collaborate with partners across industry and academia in national and European projects. The doctoral student will also report findings in international journals and conferences, take advanced courses in the Graduate School of Human-Technology-Design, and contribute to teaching or other duties up to 20% of working hours. Eligibility highlights: a Master’s degree in Industrial Ecology, Industrial Design Engineering, Production/Manufacturing Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or equivalent; at least 240 higher education credits; at least two relevant courses in Life Cycle Assessment, Environmental Systems Analysis, Environmental Science, Environmental Management, or similar topics; and strong English communication skills. For applicants educated outside Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor’s degree is accepted. Experience in circular economy, systems thinking, sustainability transitions, interdisciplinary projects, and publications will strengthen the application. Funding and conditions: the position is fully funded from the start. It is a four-year fixed-term doctoral appointment, extendable up to five years if teaching duties are taken on. The starting salary is 35,725 SEK per month (valid from 1 May 2026).
