PhD Research Position in Environmental Chemistry, Contaminant Fate and Redox Chemistry

GEUS (Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland) is advertising a 3-year PhD position in Environmental Chemistry linked to the University of Copenhagen PhD School. The project sits in the Department of Geochemistry and focuses on the fate of organic micropollutants in soil and groundwater , with a strong emphasis on contaminant fate , redox chemistry , biochar , and the generation of Reactive Oxygen Species . The research is part of a broader programme funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation . It combines molecular-to-macroscale laboratory experiments, including column and microcosm studies, successive extraction/leaching schemes, and advanced analytical techniques. The aim is to understand how biochar applications affect transport, transformation, and persistence of inorganic and organic contaminants in Danish groundwater, and how these processes relate to climate mitigation and groundwater protection. Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold a master’s degree in environmental science or a closely related field. A strong background in contaminant fate, redox chemistry, or soil and groundwater processes is highly valued. Experience with laboratory experimental work is preferred, and analytical experience with chromatography or spectroscopy is an advantage. Applicants must communicate in English and be willing to learn Danish. Funding and terms: the position is salaried according to the relevant trade union agreement.
