The Quantitative Evolutionary Microbiology Lab at Rutgers University, led by Dr. Michael Manhart, is recruiting a PhD student for fall 2026. The lab focuses on understanding the fundamental principles of evolution in microbes, working at the interface of microbiology, ecology, evolution, and systems biology through experimental, computational, and theoretical approaches. The lab is part of the Center for Advanced Biotechnology and Medicine and affiliated with the Rutgers University Microbiome Program. The successful candidate will develop and conduct research projects, present at meetings, write papers, and apply for funding. Major research directions include ecological interactions in microbial communities and the evolution of population dynamics, with flexibility for new directions. Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree in a biological or quantitative discipline by fall 2026 and a strong interest in microbial biology. Experience in laboratory techniques, genetic manipulation, and bioinformatics is preferred. The position offers a $46,000/year stipend, comprehensive health insurance, and full financial support for 5-6 years.
