Applications are now open for the Vice-Chancellor (VC) PhD Scholarships Scheme 2026 at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU), offering an excellent opportunity for doctoral research in structural engineering. The scheme is designed for exceptional students with a strong academic background, particularly those holding a Master’s degree in Structural Engineering or a closely related field. The program encourages multidisciplinary research and collaboration, supporting up to 20 studentships across diverse research areas, including engineering, neuroscience, and public health. Supervised by academic staff such as Associate Professor Michaela Gkantou, successful applicants will join a vibrant research community at LJMU, known for pioneering research and a supportive academic environment. The scholarships are open to both UK and international applicants, with full-time awards covering tuition fees, a stipend (amount specified by the Doctoral Academy), and a bench fee of £1600 per year to support research costs. Part-time scholarships cover course and bench fees only. Notably, three scholarships are specifically ring-fenced for talented UK applicants from under-represented ethnic minority backgrounds, providing full financial support and a skills development program. Eligibility criteria include a strong academic record, completion of a relevant Master’s degree before enrolment, and meeting the university’s English language requirements. Students already enrolled in a PhD or other level 8 program are not eligible. The application process requires collaboration with a supervisor, submission of a CV, research proposal, and completion of the official application form. International applicants must also clarify eligibility and visa requirements with the university’s International Admissions team. The deadline for applications is 5pm on 30 January 2026. All applications must be submitted by the lead supervisor to [email protected]. The selection process involves faculty and university panels, with decisions based on academic excellence, research proposal quality, and alignment with LJMU’s research strategy. Successful candidates will be notified by 15 April 2026 and must complete formal registration for the August/September 2026 enrolment point.
