PhD Position: AI-based Image Analysis in Oncology
This PhD position at Masaryk University, Faculty of Informatics, offers an exciting opportunity to conduct research at the intersection of artificial intelligence and biomedical image analysis, with a primary focus on oncology. The project is hosted by the Centre for Biomedical Image Analysis (CBIA), a multidisciplinary research environment that combines computer science, biomedical imaging, and clinical collaboration. The research will address key challenges in medical imaging, such as detection, segmentation, classification, and benchmarking of cancer-related image data from hospitals (MRI, CT, PET) and biological laboratories (optical microscopy).
Students will develop advanced methods to handle multidimensional and multimodal data, cope with limited resolution, imaging artifacts, class imbalance, and the inherent uncertainty and fuzziness in cancer cell and tumor boundaries. Research directions include machine learning for cancer cell detection and behavior analysis, MRI brain tumor image analysis, uncertainty management in biomedical image analysis, and the creation of metrics and benchmarks for performance evaluation. The exact research topic will be tailored to the candidate’s experience and interests in consultation with the supervisor.
The position is part of a four-year doctoral programme in Informatics, delivered in English or Czech. Doctoral students are expected to conduct independent research under supervision, publish at international venues, and participate in conferences and research stays. The funding package is competitive: tuition fees are fully waived (0 CZK), and full-time students receive a basic doctoral scholarship (18,000 CZK/month), an employment contract (20% FTE, ~7,000 CZK net/month), and a publication-performance scholarship (up to 7,000 CZK/month). Active PhD students typically earn ~32,000 CZK net monthly during the standard study period.
Applicants must have an MSc in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field, with strong skills in image analysis, deep learning, machine learning, and programming (Python, PyTorch/TensorFlow). A solid mathematical foundation is required. Preferred qualifications include experience with image processing, biomedical imaging, a publication or open-source track record, and GPU/HPC experience.
