Empa and ETH Zürich are advertising a fully funded PhD position in the SURPASS EU Horizon Europe project, focused on multi-scale modelling and experimental assessment of volumetrically prestressed concrete . The research combines finite element modelling (FEM) , large-scale experimental testing , shape memory alloys , and 3D concrete printing to advance sustainable infrastructure . The position is based in Dübendorf / Zurich, Switzerland and runs for 48 months . Supervision is listed under Prof. Dr. Eleni Chatzi (ETH Zürich), Dr. Saim Raza , and Prof. Dr. Moslem Shahverdi (Empa). The post highlights a profile with a Master's in Structural Engineering and a strong nonlinear FEM background . This opportunity is especially relevant for candidates interested in civil engineering , materials science , concrete technology , and computational/experimental structural mechanics . The post does not mention a deadline, so applicants should check the application portal promptly. Apply using the linked Refline page and follow the instructions in the posting.

Empa, a research institution of the ETH Domain in Switzerland, is offering a fully funded PhD position in the development and mechanics of shape memory alloy (SMA) Z-pin reinforced fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites. The position is based in the Structural Engineering Laboratory within the Advanced Structural Materials and Systems (ASMS) research group, in collaboration with ETH Zurich. The four-year project, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), aims to explore innovative applications of shape memory alloys for interlaminar reinforcement of laminated FRPs using prestressed Z-pins. The research will focus on the design and manufacturing of SMA Z-pinned FRPs, SMA activation and micromechanical modeling, progressive damage modeling of reinforced FRPs, and mechanical characterization and fracture experiments. The successful candidate will complete a PhD thesis at ETH Zurich under joint supervision by Empa and ETH Zurich, with Prof. Dr. Moslem Shahverdi as the main scientific group leader. Applicants should have a Master’s degree in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related discipline, with a strong background in mechanics of materials, finite element analysis, fracture mechanics, and/or SMA reinforcements. Practical experience with FRP manufacturing and mechanical experiments is highly desirable. Excellent communication skills and fluency in English are required; knowledge of German is an asset. The position offers access to state-of-the-art experimental and computational infrastructure, a collegial working atmosphere, and competitive salary and social benefits. Empa values inclusion and respect, welcoming all interested candidates. The application deadline is August 1, 2026, with the position starting by mutual agreement, no later than this date. To apply, candidates must submit a complete online application via the Empa job portal, including a letter of motivation, CV, certificates, diplomas, and contact details of two reference persons. Applications by e-mail or post will not be considered. For further information, candidates may contact Prof. Dr. Moslem Shahverdi. For more details and to apply, visit the provided links.
