The University of Plymouth is offering a fully funded PhD studentship titled ‘Lithic lava fragments – secret recorders of eruptions pre-explosive history’, starting in January 2026. This opportunity is part of the UKRI NERC-funded Large Grant ‘Ex-X’ Expecting the Unexpected: Understanding ‘dangerous’ volcanic transitions. The project will investigate how lithic lava fragments can reveal the pre-explosive history of volcanic eruptions, contributing to our understanding of hazardous volcanic transitions. The successful candidate will join a dynamic research environment and work under the supervision of Associate Professor Paul Cole. Applicants should have a strong background in Earth Science, Geology, Volcanology, or a related discipline, and demonstrate enthusiasm for volcanic research.
