Funded PhD opportunity at Northumbria University in Understanding and Governing the Collective Cognition of AI Agents . This project sits at the intersection of Computer Science , Artificial Intelligence , Multi-Agent Systems , Collective Intelligence , and Human-AI Cognition . The research will investigate how collaborating AI agents reason and coordinate, how their collective reasoning compares with human cognition, when groups of agents can outperform individuals or humans, and how to design agentic systems that remain efficient, manageable, and responsible. Likely research themes include multi-agent AI systems, large language models, multimodal AI, efficient agent collaboration and coordination, human oversight, responsible AI, AI agents for robotic decision-making, assistive technologies, and interdisciplinary applications such as metascience, finance, and healthcare. The successful PhD student will have the opportunity to work closely with the BCML Lab and engage in research collaboration, knowledge exchange, and wider AI research activities.
