PhD in Augmented Reality-Driven Robotic Inspection for Aerospace Manufacturing

PhD opportunity at the University of Strathclyde in Augmented Reality-driven Robotic Inspection for Aerospace Manufacturing . This fully funded doctoral project sits within the SEARCH (Sensor Enabled Automation, Robotics and Control Hub) and is delivered in collaboration with Boeing and the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland (NMIS) . The research focuses on integrating augmented reality , computer vision , robotics , digital manufacturing , and non-destructive testing (NDT) to improve autonomous inspection of primary aerospace structures, including CFRP airframe components. The project aims to reduce the manual burden of interpreting large volumes of ultrasonic inspection data by developing AR-enabled frameworks that spatially contextualise robotic NDT outputs directly onto aerospace structures. This is a strong fit for applicants interested in advanced robotics research with direct industrial impact, especially in aerospace inspection, automation, and intelligent manufacturing systems. Funding is excellent: the studentship is fully funded at the UKRI-approved doctoral stipend rate, with a tax-free maintenance allowance of £1,817 per month , full UK/home tuition fees , and research support for consumables and development activities. The award also includes a 3-month placement at the Boeing Aerospace Innovation Centre , plus opportunities to travel and present at international conferences. Eligibility: applicants should have a first-class or upper second-class UK honours degree (or overseas equivalent) in a relevant engineering, physical sciences, or technology-based discipline. A background in engineering, robotics, or computer science is preferred, along with a strong passion for cutting-edge robotics research. How to apply: contact Dr Randika Vithanage by email with your CV and transcripts . The project page provides the full opportunity details and application guidance. Deadline: 6 May 2026 .
