This study examines the optimization of ore receiving bins in underground copper mines, targeting the reduction of rapid wear and tear on bin components. The investigation identifies the primary wear contributors as the force exerted by the accumulated ore and the velocity at which ore particles move. By altering design and operational parameters, the objective is to decrease wear at key points such as transfer areas, thereby improving the efficiency and service life of retention bunkers. A Discrete Element Method (DEM) model of the bin was created and validated against actual mining conditions to study the impact of material flow on wear. The optimization approach used a constrained gradient descent algorithm to minimize factors like particle velocity and pressure force, while maintaining the efficiency of the bin. The findings provide valuable insights for the future design enhancements, potentially improving the operational performance of retention bunkers in the mining industry.

This article presents a novel approach to calibrating the digital twin of a laboratory mill used for copper ore milling. By integrating computer vision techniques for real-time data extraction and employing DualSPHysics simulations for various milling scenarios, including balls only, balls with ore, and balls with slurry, we achieve a high degree of accuracy in matching the digital twin’s behavior with actual mill operations. The calibration process is detailed for mills with three different diameters, highlighting the adjustments in simulation parameters necessary to account for the absence of ore. Understanding the dynamics between the suspension within the mill and the operation of the grinders is crucial for the future improvement of the grinding process. This knowledge paves the way for optimizing the process, not only in terms of the quality of the end product but primarily in terms of energy efficiency. A profound understanding of these interactions will enable engineers and technologists to design mills and grinding processes in a way that maximizes efficiency while minimizing energy consumption.

In the material transfer area, the belt is exposed to considerable damage, the energy of falling material is lost, and there is significant dust and noise. One of the most common causes of failure is transfer chute blockage, when the flow of material in the free fall or loading zone is disturbed by oversized rock parts or other objects, e.g., rock bolts. The failure of a single transfer point may cause the entire transport route to be excluded from work and associated with costly breakdowns. For this reason, those places require continuous monitoring and special surveillance measures. The number of methods for monitoring this type of blockage is limited. The article presents the research results on the possibility of visual monitoring of the transfer operating status on an object in an underground copper ore mine. A standard industrial RGB camera was used to obtain the video material from the transfer point area, and the recorded frames were processed by a detection algorithm based on a neural network. The CNN autoencoder was taught to reconstruct the image of regular transfer operating conditions. A data set with the recorded transfer blockage state was used for validation.
