Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde da Universidade do Porto

PhD Holder Researcher position in Immunology, Glycobiology, Inflammation and Gastroenterology at the Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde da Universidade do Porto (i3S), Porto, Portugal. The position is part of the Horizon Europe project “Glycans as master triggers of health to intestinal inflammation transition” (GLYCANTRIGGER, GA 101093997). The research focuses on understanding how glycosylation changes in the gut mucosa may initiate the transition from health to chronic inflammation, especially in Crohn’s disease. The project aims to uncover early immunological and mucosal mechanisms, including host-microbiome interactions and systemic antimicrobial antibody responses, to improve disease prediction and prevention. The successful candidate will join the Immunology, Cancer & GlycoMedicine research group and work in the Pinho lab, with links to project and lab information available online. The role is based at i3S in Porto and is offered as an unfixed-term research contract for a Junior Researcher, with a monthly salary of €2,408.11 . The anticipated contract start date is 1 December 2026 , subject to budget availability, and the expected duration is 12 months . Eligibility highlights: applicants must hold a PhD in a relevant life/health science area such as immunology, biology, glycobiology, biochemistry, biomedicine, or a related field; have experience in glycobiology and glyco-immunology; demonstrate proficiency in written and spoken English; provide one letter of recommendation; and be immediately available to start. Preference is given to candidates with hands-on experience in in vitro studies and molecular biology techniques such as cell culture, western blotting, immunohistochemistry/immunofluorescence, PCR, flow cytometry, and co-culture-based immunological assays. Laboratory Animal Science training and DGAV authorization eligibility are additional advantages, as are relevant publications. Application window: applications are open from 19 October 2026 until 30 October 2026 at 23:59 (Europe/Lisbon). Submission is digital in PDF format via the online i3S application portal, and applicants must include the PhD certificate or diploma, detailed CV, motivation letter in English, and one recommendation letter. For questions, candidates may contact Prof. Salomé Pinho at [email protected] . Further information is also available on the lab and project websites.
