15 PhD Positions in Forest Ecology, Biogeochemistry, and Environmental Science (FutureForests Doctoral Network)

The FutureForests Doctoral Network, funded by the EU Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA), is recruiting 15 PhD students to join an international team advancing research in forest sustainability and resilience under global change. The network connects leading European institutions, including the University of Birmingham, University of Tartu, WSL Switzerland, and University of Bologna, to address key challenges in forest ecology, biogeochemistry, and environmental science. Research projects span four main objectives: tree functional processes (leaf metabolism, growth, carbon and water relations), soil processes (nutrient cycling, soil organic matter dynamics), impacts of global change on biodiversity and tree vulnerability to pests and diseases, and modelling forest responses to climate extremes and fire risk reduction. Doctoral researchers will benefit from interdisciplinary training, international mobility, and access to flagship forest field facilities across Europe, covering Mediterranean, temperate, and boreal regions. Supervision is provided by a diverse team of experts, including Professor Sami Ullah (University of Birmingham), Dr. Rossella Guerrieri (University of Bologna), Dr. Mariangela Fotelli (Forest Research Institute, Greece), Dr. Nikos Fyllas (University of Athens), Dr. Priit Kupper (University of Tartu), and Dr. Alice Gauthey (University of Birmingham). Projects include plant ecophysiology, tree water and carbon dynamics, and forest responses to elevated CO2 and climate change. Applicants must hold a relevant Master's degree and meet MSCA mobility rules. Funding includes a full employment contract, competitive salary, living and mobility allowances, and family allowance if applicable.
