Doctoral Scholarship in Artificial Intelligence and Software Engineering

The University of Antwerp, a leading European institution, invites applications for a full-time doctoral scholarship in Artificial Intelligence and Software Engineering within the Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Sciences. This opportunity is designed for motivated candidates eager to contribute to pioneering research at the intersection of AI and software engineering, supporting the ADREM Data Lab and AnSyMo research groups. As a doctoral scholarship holder, you will prepare and defend a PhD thesis exploring how Artificial Intelligence and Software Engineering can mutually reinforce each other. The project encourages interdisciplinary approaches and aims for publication in top scientific venues. You will also apply for a PhD fellowship to the Research Foundation Flanders (FWO) during the academic year 2026-2027, with additional internal or external predoctoral funding options available. The position includes limited teaching and research management support tasks within the Department of Computer Science. Eligibility requires a master’s degree in computer science (or expected completion by appointment), excellent academic results, and demonstrated experience in AI and/or software engineering through your master’s thesis. Proficiency in English (oral and written) is essential, and candidates should align with the university’s educational vision and research policies, showing qualities such as integrity, creativity, and cooperation. The scholarship is initially offered for one year, with the possibility of extension up to four years following positive evaluation. The monthly scholarship amount is set according to university rates, and additional benefits include ecocheques, internet-connectivity allowance, bicycle allowance or full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting. Doctoral researchers gain access to a wide range of courses and educational credit through the Antwerp Doctoral School, and will work primarily at Campus Middelheim in a dynamic, stimulating environment. Applications must be submitted online via the University of Antwerp’s job application platform by August 13, 2026. Required documents include your academic CV, a copy of your master’s thesis, and a list of references. The selection committee will review applications promptly after the deadline, and interviews are expected to take place August 20–21, possibly online. For questions about the application process, contact [email protected]. Prospective applicants are encouraged to reach out to Professors Toon Calders ([email protected]) and Serge Demeyer ([email protected]) for further information. The University of Antwerp is committed to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunities, and welcomes applicants from all backgrounds. The institution holds the European Commission’s HR Excellence in Research Award and offers a family-friendly, sustainable working environment that invests in employee growth.
