PhD Position in Cement Chemistry and Sustainable Construction at Korea Maritime and Ocean University

The Ocean Architecture Materials Lab at Korea Maritime and Ocean University (KMOU) in Busan, South Korea, is inviting applications for a fully funded PhD student position. The lab is dedicated to pioneering research in eco-friendly building materials, carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS), biochar, and smart construction technologies, all aimed at advancing carbon neutrality and enhancing the performance and durability of buildings. Research in this group focuses on the chemistry and microstructure of cementitious materials, including hydration mechanisms and durability. The successful candidate will utilize advanced characterization techniques such as XRD, SEM, TGA, FTIR, and NMR to study cement-based systems and contribute to projects that reduce CO2 emissions in construction through sustainable materials and CCUS strategies. Responsibilities include conducting independent and collaborative research under faculty supervision, participating in lab activities, mentoring undergraduate students, and presenting research at conferences. The position is ideal for candidates with a master’s degree in Civil Engineering, a strong academic background, and a keen interest in cement chemistry or sustainable construction. Experience with experimental techniques for characterizing cementitious materials and strong English communication skills are required. Experience with material characterization or computational modeling is preferred but not mandatory. The successful applicant will receive a full tuition waiver and a monthly stipend, along with access to state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and interdisciplinary research opportunities. Additional support is provided for attending international conferences and publishing in high-impact journals. The research environment at KMOU is dynamic and collaborative, located in Busan, a leading hub for maritime and environmental innovation. To apply, candidates should submit a cover letter describing their research interests and motivation, a CV including academic records and publications, and academic transcripts (undergraduate and master’s) to Dr. Kwangwoo Wi at [email protected] with the subject line "Ph.D. Application – KMOU". The application deadline is January 4, 2026, with rolling review until the position is filled. For further inquiries, contact Dr. Kwangwoo Wi at the same email address. Korea Maritime and Ocean University is renowned for its leadership in maritime, engineering, and environmental sciences, and is committed to fostering sustainable technologies for a better future.
