The research group of Shourya Dutta Gupta in the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad is seeking a Ph.D. candidate for research in advanced materials science and characterization. The project focuses on thin film science , particularly the design, synthesis, and fundamental understanding of functional metallic and alloy thin-film architectures. Students will investigate how materials behave at microstructural and atomic scales and how their structure, chemistry, and properties are connected. A major component of the research is correlative microscopy , combining multimodal techniques to link structural, chemical, and functional information. Potential methods include scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and atom probe tomography. The group also investigates in-situ TEM and in-situ optical properties. These approaches enable real-time observation of microstructural evolution, phase transformations, and dynamic optical responses when materials are exposed to thermal, mechanical, or electrical stimuli. The opening offers an opportunity to work at the intersection of materials science, metallurgy, physics, chemistry, nanoscience, microscopy, and dynamic characterization in a research group focused on frontier questions in functional materials.
