The Department of Biology at the University of Padova, Italy, is inviting applications for a PhD position focused on the project “BIOPOP – Decoding Bioenergetic Pathway Interactions to Unlock the Potential of Plant Productivity.” Under the supervision of Professor Tomas Morosinotto, this research assignment aims to advance our understanding of plant bioenergetics and productivity by investigating the four major metabolic pathways in photosynthetic organisms: the light-dependent phase of photosynthesis, carbon fixation, photorespiration, and mitochondrial respiration. The project will utilize genetically modified Physcomitrium patens lines to dissect the roles of these pathways, integrating functional data with RNA sequencing and metabolomics to build a holistic view of bioenergetic interactions within plant cells. The ultimate goal is to identify genetic targets for translational research, supporting the development of crop varieties with enhanced productivity to meet future agricultural demands. The Photosynthesis Lab at the University of Padova offers over 20 years of expertise in plant biochemistry and molecular physiology, providing access to state-of-the-art facilities and a vibrant international research environment. The PhD School supports students with training in grant writing and intellectual property, preparing them for future academic and industry careers. Applicants should have a strong background in plant biology, molecular biology, genetics, or related fields, with experience in RNA sequencing, metabolomics, or plant physiology considered an asset. The position is supported by the FIS project (BIOPOP), though specific details on stipend and tuition are not provided. The application deadline is February 3, 2026, and candidates should apply online via the CINECA portal. For further information, contact Prof. Tomas Morosinotto or visit the lab’s academic and social media pages.
