About

Dr. William Hughes is a faculty member at the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton, UK. His research focuses on areas such as fiber-based micro-mirrors, photon extraction from emitter-cavity systems, and optimization of ion-cavity interfaces for quantum photonic networks. Notable contributions include the development of methods for modeling mode mixing in optical cavities and the investigation of effects related to cavity birefringence in polarization-encoded quantum networks.

This PhD project at the University of Southampton, within the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Quantum Technology Engineering, focuses on the optimisation of optical microresonators for quantum technology applications. The research aims to advance the design of microscale optical resonators—devices that trap photons between microscopic mirrors—to enhance the interaction between light and quantum emitters such as atoms, ions, or nonlinear crystals. These microresonators are pivotal for future quantum computing, communication, and sensing technologies, as they enable more efficient and faster quantum interactions. The project will combine photonics, quantum physics, and computational modelling, including numerical simulations and potentially machine learning techniques, to optimise the spatial shape of photons and the design of resonator mirrors. Recent findings suggest that optimising mirror shapes can dramatically increase photon localisation, opening new possibilities for quantum applications. Research topics include trapped ion chains for quantum computing, neutral atom arrays for quantum simulation, entangled photon sources for quantum communication, micro-optomechanical systems for quantum sensing, and single-photon wavelength conversion for hybrid quantum networks. The successful candidate will join a collaborative and supportive research environment, benefit from world-leading expertise, and have opportunities to work with experimental groups at Southampton and the QCi3 National Quantum Technology Hub. The position offers substantial training in scientific, technical, and commercial skills. Funding is competitive: UK students receive a 4-year UKRI TechExpert tax-free stipend of approximately £31,000 per year, with studentships at the UKRI base rate available for EU, Horizon Europe, and international students. Overseas students with external funding are encouraged to apply. Entry requirements include an undergraduate degree with at least a UK 2:1 honours or international equivalent, and applications should include a CV, two academic references, degree transcripts/certificates, and English language qualification if applicable. The university is committed to equality, diversity, and inclusivity, and supports applicants seeking part-time study. The application deadline is 31 July 2026 (international applicants: 31 March 2026). For further information, contact Dr Peter Horak ([email protected]).
