PhD Position in Marine Energy, Structural Dynamics, and Advanced Concrete Technology

Ph.D. opportunity at the University of New Hampshire in Structural Engineering , with a research focus at the intersection of marine energy , structural dynamics , advanced concrete technology , wave energy converters , and ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) . The position is in Dr. Philippe Kalmogo’s research group in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. The project aims to design and analyze Wave Energy Converter (WEC) hulls using UHPC, with work spanning computational fluid dynamics (CFD) , finite element analysis (FEA) , structural mechanics, fluid dynamics, concrete design, and laboratory/wave-flume testing. The role also includes developing innovative designs to improve the performance of wave energy converters as an alternative power source. Responsibilities include CFD coupled with FEA for point absorbers and oscillating water columns, numerical design of WEC hulls, laboratory testing of UHPC properties, wave flume testing to refine and validate hull designs, maintaining reproducible workflows, and reporting results through presentations, technical reports, and journal manuscripts. Eligibility highlights : applicants should have a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, Marine Energy, or a related field; strong coursework in reinforced/prestressed concrete, fluid dynamics, ocean structure design, structural dynamics, and finite element analysis; strong English communication skills; proficiency in Ansys Fluent and Mechanical; familiarity with ACI 318-25, PCI Design Handbook, and ACI PRC-357.2/357.3; and programming/numerical skills in C++, Python, or MATLAB. Funding : the post explicitly states this is a fully funded Ph.D. position . Application : email Dr. Philippe Kalmogo at [email protected] with the subject line Ph.D. Application — [Your Name] . Attach a CV, one-page statement of research interests and career goals, unofficial transcripts, contact information for two academic references, and GRE scores. TOEFL/IELTS scores should be included if applicable. Start date : Fall 2026.
