PhD Positions in Mining Optimization, Operations Research, and Computing Science at University of Alberta

The University of Alberta's School of Mining and Petroleum Engineering, within the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, is offering four funded PhD positions starting September 2026. These positions are based in the Mining Optimization Laboratory (MOL), which focuses on research in simulation and optimization of mining systems, as well as mine planning optimization and design. The research leverages operations research, mathematical modeling, simulation, and intelligent agents to solve complex, large-scale mine planning and operations decision-making problems. Applicants should have strong academic backgrounds in Mining Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Computing Science, or Operations Research, with high GPAs and degrees from reputable institutions. Proficiency in English (TOEFL/IELTS), computer programming, and databases is required, and experience in mathematical programming and discrete-event simulation is advantageous. Applicants must submit official transcripts, degree certificates, three academic references (at least two academic), and English language proficiency scores if applicable.
