PhD in Built Heritage Studies: Cocoa Heritage Mapping and Sustainable Landscapes

PhD opportunity in Built Heritage Studies at the University of Antwerp , Belgium, focused on cocoa heritage , heritage mapping , sustainable landscapes , and augmented multimodal mapping . The project explores the multidimensional narratives of cocoa cultivation in São Tomé and Príncipe or Ghana , depending on the candidate’s language skills. The research aims to document and represent both tangible and intangible heritage values linked to cocoa heritage and to develop a people-centered, transferable framework for mapping agricultural heritage systems. The position combines heritage research, digital methodologies, community engagement, and international collaboration within the ARCHES Research Group and the Architecture and Interior (A+I) Research Group . This is a fully funded PhD scholarship position. The initial appointment is for one year and may be renewed annually up to four years in total, subject to positive evaluation. The planned start date is 1 November 2026 (or 1 January 2027 for non-Belgian nationality) or as soon as possible thereafter. Eligibility highlights include a Master’s degree in heritage studies or a related field such as architecture, architectural conservation, urban planning, or interior architecture; excellent academic results; and at least C1-level English and/or Portuguese . Dutch is desirable but not required. Experience in the cultural heritage sector is an advantage.
