Postdoc and PhD Positions in Lunar Science, Planetary Geology, and Remote Sensing at The University of Hong Kong

The Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at The University of Hong Kong is advertising 1 postdoc and 2 PhD positions in lunar science, planetary geology, remote sensing, geochemistry, geophysics, and computer science/AI for Science . The projects aim to connect lunar sample studies , in situ investigations , remote sensing observations , and numerical simulations to better understand the origin and evolution of the Moon. Project I focuses on Chang’e-5, Chang’e-6 lunar samples and lunar meteorites . The postdoc role is suited to candidates with a PhD in geology, mineralogy, petrology, geochemistry , or related areas, plus research experience in extraterrestrial materials , cosmochemistry , or igneous petrology . A PhD student track is also available for applicants with a BSc/MSc background in similar sample-focused fields. Project II is a PhD opportunity on robotic and human lunar landing sites . It is aimed at candidates with a BSc/MSc in remote sensing, geomatics, geoinformation science, geophysics, astrophysics, physics, or computer science , especially those with experience in lunar or planetary datasets and numerical models . The 2027/28 main round application opens on 2026-09-01 and closes on 2026-12-01 , followed by two clearing rounds. Admitted students will be fully funded through the Postgraduate Scholarships at HKD 19,655/month (about USD 2,500 ). Exceptional applicants may also target the HKU Presidential PhD Scholar Programme or the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme , which offers HKD 28,400/month (about USD 3,600 ).
