Doshisha University in Japan is inviting applications for one postdoctoral researcher to join a joint research project with Professor Yury Korolev at the University of Bath, UK. The project is supported by the Royal Society through the ISPF International Collaboration Awards 2025 Round 2 – Japan and is titled Operator Learning for Gradient Flows with Applications in Imaging . The research will focus on the mathematical foundations of operator learning , with possible topics including operator learning, gradient flows, convex analysis, functional analysis, inverse problems, neural operators, and transformers. The university states that applicants are not expected to have expertise in all of these areas, but should have a strong interest in them and be motivated to pursue related problems. The successful candidate will collaborate with project members and contribute to research papers for international journals. The position is based at Doshisha University’s Kyotanabe Campus in Kyotanabe City, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan. Research and academic communication will be conducted in English, and Japanese is not required . The appointment is full-time and temporary, with an employment period from 1 April 2027 to 31 March 2029 and no contract renewal. Salary is approximately JPY 4.5 million per year , subject to Doshisha University regulations. There are no teaching duties and no dedicated individual research budget. Travel and relocation expenses are not provided, although the university will assist international appointees with Certificate of Eligibility and visa procedures. Applicants must hold a PhD in mathematics or a closely related discipline , or expect to obtain one by the starting date. Candidates must also be able to conduct research and communicate academically in English.
