Commonwealth PhD Scholarships 2026

Commonwealth PhD Scholarships are prestigious doctoral awards offered through the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the United Kingdom, with funding from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office. The scheme is designed to enable talented researchers from eligible Commonwealth countries to undertake full-time PhD study and contribute to sustainable development in their home countries.

The programme most commonly supports PhD study at UK universities. Reference postings show that scholars typically need support from a proposed supervisor at the host university, and some opportunities are linked to specific departments or research groups. The scholarships are generally intended for applicants from least developed and vulnerable Commonwealth countries, though some calls and partner routes may have different country eligibility arrangements.

In the UK route, the scholarship is typically fully funded and commonly covers tuition fees, a living stipend, return travel, and additional allowances. Some postings also mention possible support for dependants and research-related costs, in line with programme rules. The scholarship is aimed at applicants who could not otherwise afford to study in the host country and who can demonstrate strong academic merit and research potential.

Applicants usually need a relevant prior degree, often at least an upper second-class standard or equivalent, and in many cases a Master's degree is expected or advantageous for doctoral admission. Common application materials include academic transcripts, proof of citizenship or refugee status where relevant, references, a research proposal or statement, and a supporting statement from a prospective supervisor. English-language ability must meet the admission requirements of the host university.

Applications are generally made through the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission system and may also require nomination through an approved nominating agency or parallel admission to the chosen university. Because eligibility rules, participating countries, and timelines can vary by route and year, applicants should always check the current official call before applying.
