About this position

Nottingham Trent University is offering a 2027 PhD studentship through the Collaboratory Research Hub on connecting older communities through digital heritage, storytelling, and co-creation.

The project investigates how heritage engagement and appropriate digital or immersive technologies can support healthy ageing, social inclusion, community belonging, and reduced isolation among older adults in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire. It will focus on barriers including reduced mobility, accessibility limitations, shrinking social networks, and digital exclusion.

Working with the National Justice Museum, Nottingham's City of Caves, and Hot Knife Digital Media Ltd, the successful researcher will use participatory methods to co-create and evaluate heritage experiences with older residents. Their memories, identities, and lived experiences will shape physical, digital, and hybrid forms of engagement.

The research will examine relationships between heritage participation, social connection, and wellbeing; identify barriers and opportunities for inclusive heritage activities; assess when digital approaches are appropriate; and develop practical guidance and a transferable framework for age-friendly and digitally inclusive heritage practice.

The candidate will be enrolled at Nottingham Trent University. Supervisors and project partners include Glyn Lawson of Nottingham Trent University, Chris King of the University of Nottingham, and Gary Holmes of the National Justice Museum. Applicants should consult the official university project page for eligibility, funding details, deadlines, and application instructions.
